Movies With Social Issues in Focus

Tales, fables, stories are part of our upbringing. Whether it is movies or any other art form we all like tales and dramatic stories. When the story is about people we can easily identify with, the interest in the story will be tenfold. Art MoviesThere are two types of movies--Drama movies and Commercial movies. The former is also known as 'Art movies'. In character development is more realistic. In the Elizabethan era Shakespearean dramas were the fountain of popular entertainment. In the post World War 11 world that position was taken over by movies. At the same time, the scope of entertainment in the modern era too changed. In a movie, a director is trying to present a story without violating the tastes of the viewers. In a drama movie the director will rake up a serious social issue and find an answer. Through social themes such as drug addiction, alcoholism, poverty, massacre and corruption these drama movies depict incidents based on social, cultural or political issues. They usually consolidate the theme of an entire storyline than the heroism of single characters. The movie often ends with a positive note or a moral message.
Defining Drama Movies
Most dramatic movies deal with emotional themes like alcoholism, drug addiction, racial prejudice, poverty, religious intolerance, crime and corruption.

Among the famous drama movies are 'The Godfather' (1972), The 'Shawshank Redemption' (1994), and 'Schindler's List' (1993). These movies are masterpieces. They are liked passionately by the masses and the elite for THEIR unique plots, moving emotional sequences and terrific performances by the main actors. In the galaxy of best drama movies comes Citizen Kane, Saving Private Ryan, Pulp Fiction, Dev D, Casablanca etc.

Take the case of 'The Godfather' as an example of a celebrated drama movie. It is a case study for all filmmakers and remains an eternal 'masterpiece' for its classy direction, shot development and power packed performances by actors Al Pacino, Marlon Brando and James Caan. The film captures the life and times of mafia dons in the 1940s through the inner family drama within the Italian-American Corleone mafia family. It stands out for its amazing plot development and realistic portrayal. That the film has been preserved in the US National file registry as the second best film in the history of America is a great tribute.The Godfather apart, 'Shawshank Redemption' and 'Schindler's List' received kudos for best screenplay and the emotional impact. The emotional shots of these films can make any strong man cry. These two films excelled on their concept. 'The Shawshank Redemption' narrates the story of a character Andy Dufrane who was wrongly imprisoned for 20 years. The film depicts his life in the prison and the relationship he maintains with a fellow prisoner Redding and his escape from the prison.The 'Schindler's List' has been yet another epoch making film portrayed the torture endured by the Jews after the Second World War. The film also celebrates the humanism of a German named Oscar Schindler who saves thousands of Polish Jews from the concentration camp.Citizen KaneCitizen Kane is an interesting. The main character is played by Orson Welles in his role as a powerful newspaper tycoon named Charles Foster Kane. A series of flashbacks Kane introduce the protagonist through the memories of others. It was a great film because of its visual style and stunning reviews even today. The film also had a huge star cast. In a nutshell, epitomize social issues. They highlight burning issues of the society cutting across cultures and traditions. By watching drama movies we become more humane and less egotistic and cynical in our outlook towards the society.
